Just been on the phone with him, we've just turned off disk

How weird..

I know that I've turned off all sorts of things to get Vista to lift
it's skirts, but this was verging on the ridiculous.

It really was that bad, and now that we've turned disk journalling off
it flies along.

Yes, that is weird. As Chris says, you've got issues.

Imagine having to format a Vista or XP machine to FAT32 to get it to work
properly? That's more or less what you've just done.

Erm, no, he's using the same disc format and so on, he's just turned off
the journalling - which is an extra step of disc writing done to keep
track of what the OS is about to do so that in case of a crash it can
look at the record of what it was *intending* to do, see what got done,
and then sort out the problems.

In other words, journalling means you can re-boot without needing to run
a disc repair utility. Or so they say. The one time I tried it, I
wished I hadn't...

So having journalling off isn't a major hassle - what I do if I have to
force reboot is

cmd-s to reboot into single user mode

fsck -yf

and then

reboot

to repair the boot volume and reboot.

Then log in, log out, log in, reboot. Then things tend to be good.

This could just be a
symptom of the serious lack of memory or it could be indicative of problems
with the hard disk.

I can't see how it could be a RAM problem.

It it worth getting all the updates, I've read mixed reviews about
them.

Again, in PC terms, would you run XP without SP2 these days? Think of the
major updates (10.5.0 -> 10.5.1 -> 10.5.2) as being like service packs.
Apple likes to release these in much smaller and easier to digest chunks
than Microsoft but it's the same principle.

Thanks for your suggestions Chris.

It seems that I'm going to leave disk journalling off for now at
least.

I've ordered another 1GB RAM for it, to replace one of the 256MB.

Good idea. With the price of memory these days and all modern operating
systems being what they are, it just doesn't make sense to cut corners here.

Some modern operating systems are designed to work without gigabytes of
RAM, you know. It helps Apple to require its customers to continually
upgrade their hardware by placing greater demands on it with new
software, but it's not much help for car makers to have a requirement to
fit 1GB/computer, is it?

Aside from that: yeah, stuff in as much RAM as you can. You can never
have too much RAM or too much disc space.

Rowland.
