But the file data is not removed from the hard disc drive either: the
file data remains on disc until over-written by something.

So: if you want to remove the data, you need to over-write the disc
blocks where the files are stored. The straightforward way to do that
with MacOS X or higher is `Secure delete trash' from the Finder
application menu.
