You don't use that component of Office - fair enough - but to others it's
*the* critical element of the Office suite.

I could imagine the calendar/contact part being useful, but there's no
need to use the mail part. If the mail server is set up properly, seems
to me any mail agent could be used.

I'm sure it could, but remember that many corporate IT departments get site
licensing for Microsoft Office and, as Outlook includes a perfectly good mail
function along with all the other bits, why bother with anything else? It'd
just be one more thing to deploy and maintain.

As you say, there are plenty of other mail clients that will talk to an
Exchange server but perhaps not with the level of integration that the
Microsoft products allow - take a look at the Project Centre on Entourage to
see how all the mails, appointments, contacts, journal entries etc etc for a
single project can be integrated together.
