Time Machine and Migration Assistant

So today I needed to use Time Machine in earnest. Messing about trying to
sort out an obscure bug in iCal, I corrupted my system so badly that nothing
would work properly. Fiddled around for a couple of hours, then gave up: ah,
sod it, let's go for the full backup - that's what Time Machine is for, after
all.
Go to unused partition, install a clean Leopard and boot from it. Open
Migration Assistant.
Now, here's the thing. Migration Assistant will let me migrate directly into
the clean system from my Time Machine disk *but only from the latest backup*.
How crazy that is! I *know* the latest backup is corrupt. What's the point of
TM holding onto yesterday if I can't use it?
So it seems the only solution is to use TM to put yesterday onto a blank
partition (about 2 hours), then - since it won't boot, of course - use
Migration Assistant to restore it thence onto the fresh system (another 2
hours).
Now someone tell me how I should have done it.
