Hi,

Installing the three Software Updates (Front Row, iTunes and QuickTime)
last night caused havoc on my G5.

After restarting, whenever I tried to log in it would bring up the Setup
Assistant (as though it could not find my account) and crashed if you
tried to quit it. In Target Disk mode you could see that all the files
were still present and correct, but MacOS X was unable to associate them
with my user account.

Fortunately, this was also reported by MacinTouch:

http://www.macintouch.com/readerreports/apple/topic4715.html#d16jan2008

with a fix procedure which has worked for me. That is, restart in safe
mode (holding SHIFT after the beep) then restart it again from the login
box *without attempting to log in*.

Hope the forewarning is useful to somebody.

That happens in 10.4 if you open or close applications wile the System
Optimise process is active. That's been going on for a long time now. I
don't think it should in 10.5 as they seem to force a logout before
running the installers (at least on ones that need a restart anyway).

My normal procedure for updates is to run a Permissions Repair, then
quit all apps, run the updater, and maybe run Permissions Repair again
(after the restart if needed), and I usually do a logout/in if a restart
wasn't required. This seems to have bode me well for a long time now,
some of it may be unnecessary, but I have never suffered with a problem
after an update <touches some wood>.

Doesn't the 10.5 update process install the updates immediately after a
re-boot and before the system starts?

Peter
