Hi, and a Happy New to one & all!
Not for me, but boyo wanted one of
these for Christmas. He got enough
money presents to get one, BUT, if
you read the appendix at the end, we
are now a bit lost :s as to what to do
for the best.
Any ideas out there please?

I'm new to this level of video camera so perhaps this is the norm and I
just don't realise it, but MPEG-2?! Seriously, MPEG-2 as an editing
format? Are they mad? It's an appalling format for editing, the muxed
nature of it just makes separating things out terrible and imprecise.
Was only every meant as a distribution format.
That's exactly what these "DVD" and "HDD" cameras are supposed to do -
record video for distribution on DVD to relatives. They're practically
impossible to use for producing editable video, because they're MPEG-2
and need converting to something editable. Not strictly true, because
you can cut bits out of the movie, and rearrange clips.
I was able to do some editing of a DVD video camera using Handbrake to
extract the audio and video streams, but the end result is rubbish. Good
enough for home movies I suppose, in the same way as a 1.2 Megapixel
camera with a plastic lens is good enough for children's birthday
parties.
If you want to do anything other than burn the video direct to DVD, get
a Mini-DV camera, or if you have the money and a reasonably fast
computer, Mini-HDV.
