Catching conflicts

You may remember Conflict Catcher for OS9 and older. It provided a methodical
way of tracking down conflicts between INITs.
I've got a little problem since I installed the latest version of Default
Folder in OSX 10.4.11. After a restart, clicking on the Trash icon in the
Dock causes a Finder crash. I and the developer of Default Folder have been
unable to find the cause.
If I disable Mail as a login item, the Dock behaves itself and Finder doesn't
crash. (I discovered this accidentally).
If I de-install Default Folder all is well.
So it seems that Default Folder is quarrelling without something else.
How does one trace these conflicts in OSX?
I've checked the Console log and removed a couple of mentioned Scripting
Additions and an Input Manager but that solved nothing.
Where else should I look?
