This feels like the slow and painful improvement from System 6 onwards,
except that these days we know a lot more about what we want from our
OS, so I *know* I want to be able to sort my find results by size.

true it doesn't I know that for a FACT. Don't doubt yourself, you know when you type in a filename and it returns no results, and you have computer clicked or a specific volume and filename clicked, and it has no results, BUT you can navigate a little and find the file that it's BUGGY as Hell. I know that for a fact but oh well...
