I think that there will be plenty of time for Apple to get pally with IBM again if needs be.
It's a pity they didn't stick with Power 6/Power 7 for high end stuff like Xserves and just use Intel for the consumer stuff. Developers are going to have to produce universal binaries for some years to come anyway so it wouldn't hurt to have a dual architecture product range for the indefinite future.
Oh well, we can dream...
