I'm not sure what you mean by "a screen lock", I'm using a powerbook so detaching the keyboard is difficult.

It's a Keychain Access option. You get a little lock symbol
in the menubar, and in the pull-down menu it has "Lock
Screen". If you select that, the screensaver kicks in and
you have to enter a password to get back to the desktop.

To get the symbol in your menubar, open up Keychain
Access and tick this:

Preferences -> General -> Show Status in Menu Bar
