Had a similar experience post-Leopard, when a user could not log in
with her password, or with the new password made as you describe.

Problem was solved with a procedure from the Apple web site

even though the problem described was not exactly my problem

I tried that (thanks for the pointer) but it seems to use instructions that
are applicable to 10.5 only.
