A friend brought me her ailing Starmax 4000 (Motorola Mac clone) which
I have coaxed into life, however briefly.
She has had it 10 years, and never done a backup in its life.
The machine has only serial, geoport and and old-style 25 pin SCSI
ports. Oh, and a floppy disk.
I'm OK using the floppy to get all her data and fonts saved.
I have an old Bondi iMac running 8.6 that she can have.
I can get a USB floppy drive for about £30 for it, which would be
useful anyway.
How can I get her Quark 3.mumble over to the iMac?
I can probably find a SCSI cable and some old SCSI disk somewhere, but
I don't have anything else with a network connection or CD writer that
also has SCSI.
Are there any PCI slots? You could whack in a card with
$useful_connectors on, eg a USB card, and then use a memory stick or
something.
That's almost exactly what I was going to suggest.
However, IIRC the clones were usually based on the old Mac 4400
'Tanzania' motherboard, before condemning it just check the PRAM
battery, these won't boot if the battery is dead.
I put a 4 port USB card into a 4400 I gave my Mum a few years ago, which
seemed OK.
Or break out a comms program (on the Starmax) and "dial in" to a Mac
with a serial/USB cable?
These both have Ethernet, wouldn't simply plugging them in and using
Sharing do the job?
