In fact Parental Controls doesn't actually appear to have been -used- by anyone inside Apple whilst developing. I can't set it up to do the most basic of things. The aim:

1. To have only certain applications launchable,
2. To make it obvious where to click for launching those apps.
3. To restrict browsing to only certain web sites
4. To make the websites our kids typically go to easily accessible
5. To set the home page to the place our kids most normally go.
6. To limit who can be emailed/chatted to

Leopard's scorecard is...

1. Done
2. Failed, can't be done. Can't lock the dock, can't put items in the dock when in Simple Finder mode
3. 80% done, but apple.com gets a free ride
4. Failed. Leopard insists on showing all allowed sites in the bookmark bar, not just the few I want
5. Mostly failed. Possible by disabling parental controls, setting a home page, then re-enabling. Which is very poor.
6. Not tried yet - restrictions set but I haven't set up email accounts or AIM accounts for the kids. Would appear to pass at first glance though.

Not very good is it? Only one task out of six gets an unequivocal pass mark, though point six also gets the benefit of the doubt, but it's not as if the others are obscure or anything. In fact I'd suggest that's what the vast majority wanting to use parental controls actually need.

Scenario:

"Ooh, <insert name here> enjoys using the web, but needs a safe environment to do it in"

I want:

1. A dock showing just the programs I'd like and which is unable to change
2. To control access to other sites etc.
3. To present the bookmarks so that <insert name here> can easily get to where they want.

It's failed literally every one of those requirements.

Cheers,
Ian
