Laser printer connection puzzle!

Trying to connect a PC (on XP) to a brand new Xerox laser printer via
ethernet network. Just getting the message: "An error occurred during
port configuration". The PC does have internet access so the network
connection is there. The puzzling thing is that it was working a few
days ago. Then my iMac (Leopard) started to have difficulties with the
printer and I deleted and added the printer again. It seemed that the
PC's problems happened after this although it could be coincidence.
It is just confusing and I don't even understand which of the ways of
connecting the Mac to the printer is best - IP (that's the one I'm using
at the minute I think!), or AppleTalk, or Windows, or 'Default'. If it's
IP should I select the 'Line Printer Daemon' protocol or 'Internet
Printing Protocol'.
I'm not expecting comprehensive answers to this rather vague and
rambling problem. But if anyone can point me to a good site, or offer
advice like, 'whenever you have an office ethernet network with Airport
Extreme with a few Macs and one PC and you're all trying to connect to a
laser printer, whatever you do, make sure you don't........!
Thanks
Ian
