Come on, what is this 'most basic of everyday apps'?

For most (younger?) people it seems it's MSN Messenger and IE. A
browser that can (does) work with many web sites that Safari may not
.. that and they watch streaming BBC media etc etc.

Seeing as T i m doesn't seem to want to actually answer the question you
are repeatedly asking, I'll do it for him. MSN - at least in the
colloquial sense that T i m is using[1] - is an instant messaging app.
Think a hybrid of email and IRC.

Funnily enough - and as is often the case with T i m's arguments - even
if you did consider an IM app a 'basic' and 'everyday' app, the only way
his argument holds water is if you specify your requirements in terms of
solutions rather than problems. Sure, he insinuates MSN is not available
for the Mac (though it is[1]) and will probably qualify by saying that
it's not the same as the Windows version. But you don't need to use the
official MSN client to use the MSN IM network; in fact I never have, and
use MSN daily on both my Mac and PC. Nobody has ever noticed that I
don't use the official MSN, so I must be doing alright.

His argument is like saying "You can't get IE7 on the Mac" - specifying
the solution and not the problem. Saying that would be a truth, but you
can get plenty of alternatives that do the same thing, and usually do
them better.

[1] The real MSN is actually pretty much just a website these days (and,
of course, works on Macs). And the MSN IM client is not even called MSN
Messenger any more; it's Windows Live Messenger. I don't know if that
inaccuracy is what you were alluding to with your questions.
