It sounds to me like some sort of hardware issue.
I've had him send me the output from system.log. It includes:
IOUSBWorkLoop::closeGate - interrupt Thread being held offUSB caused
wake event (EHCI)
He also has some problems with USB - sometimes, devices attached don't
show up until after a restart.
Oh - and what's the Intel equivalent of an Open Firmware reset?
