It sounds to me like some sort of hardware issue.

I've had him send me the output from system.log. It includes:
IOUSBWorkLoop::closeGate - interrupt Thread being held offUSB caused wake event (EHCI)

He also has some problems with USB - sometimes, devices attached don't
show up until after a restart.

I've had that all the time when my KVM is plugged in.

Get them to reproduce it with NO external devices plugged in or network interfaces active inc eth,wireless and bluetooth...

That seems like the best plan to me too.
