Again, to you that wiring probably looks 'terrible' but to me it's
down to practicality, especially for something that evolved with the
equipment / standards at the time.

The Company board is now too big. It would have looked better with the
older 'bigger' meter on there and there may have been some other stuff
like Economy7 timers and switches etc.

From the new digital meter the tails go into Henley blocks and from
there feed two isolator switches. This meant you could fully isolate
the feed to one or other of the CU's and not have to pull the (sealed)
company fuse. They would also give you double pole isolation whereas
pulling the fuse would only isolate the phase.

I have no idea what on earth you're talking about, not being a humble
electrical engineer,

Ok ..

but I know that when we had the wiring re-done, my
mate who is a humble electrical engineer said it was a dog's breakfast.

I didn't say it was pretty

There were lighting circuits coming off wall socket fuses, some circuits
had no fuse at all, some loose ends that were still attached to one side
of a fuse so if the fuse had been inserted it would have made the wire
live, and some of the wiring connected two of the fuseboxes together
completely unnecessarily, so you had two fuses on the one circuit.

Oh, sorry I missed all that .. given I was shown a picture of the
company board and a few boxes ...

Presumably (but who knows?) whoever fitted the power company meter saw
this bodge-job, decided it wasn't his problem and just did the minimum
required on his side of the power feed.

Sounds about right. They are just contracted 'fitters' paid a pittance
to change 'n' boxes a day. Your house wasn't on fire before they got
there so unlikely to be so after they fit a new meter.

Or maybe he was so impressed by
the Henley blocks on the Keyleigh trunion that he realised he was out of
his depth, in the presence of artistry by the Michaelangelo of
electrical flex.

So that's both of you out of your depth .. again .. ;-)

All the best ..
