I didn't say there shouldn't be more options and less bugs.
There are things I very much don't like about Mail (most notably the
quoting, but I dislike the thread view implementation too),
Yeah, both suck definitly. For mailinglists I still use Gnus, which does
threading the right way.
Good choice. Or Mutt, in my case.
One thing I hate is that when you read a message and scroll it down and
then click on another message it is scrolled down, too. Not always, but
very often.
Another peeve that springs to mind: if you do `Long headers' on one
email, and then move to another, it doesn't show the full headers on
the second email.
and plenty of features it really ought to have, but the only *bug*
that I've really noticed is the one where messages refuse to stay
read, and keep reappearing as unread every time Mail reloads the
mailbox. I can only assume this isn't a deliberate `feature', since it
seemingly happens at random.
*Never* had that. Looks like a problem on the IMAP server (or a problem
with Mail.app communicating with it).
A little googling reveals that I am not alone:

Ah! That page leads me to this part of GPGMail's FAQ:
Q: Since I installed GPGMail, some read messages have their 'read' status
come back to 'unread'. What's happening?
A: It's is a bug in GPGMail that I've been unable to fix yet. The only
workaround that works for most people (but not all) is to disable
automatic decryption/verification of emails.
So, I take it back: presumably this isn't a bug in Mail after all.
Sorry, Apple.
Spotlight searching is definitely a good (if not the best, perhaps) Mail
feature, though -- it's fast and works well.
The Smart Folders are great, too. The rules/filters setup is nicely
done, although somewhat limited. The spamfilter has a nice interface,
but filters not that good (why don't they just license dspam or some
other well-working filter? -- no need to reinvent the wheel poorly).
Ah, yes, you're right, Smart Folders are fantastic, and the rules and
filtering is, I would say, at the very top end of adequate (I mean that
in a positive way -- for the /vast/ majority of people, I bet they are
totally sufficient, and the interface to them is very, very good).
I turned spamfiltering off, since it just seemed to slow things down,
and I run SpamAssassin on my mail server anyway.
What I hate the most: The plugin-interface is not documented, all
plugins are basically hacks against a "private" (=secret and changing)
interface and if you install more than one plugin the chances are high
that you'll trigger bugs or get an otherwise unreliable app. If you have
problems with Mail.app, throw out all plugins, rebuild the mailboxes and
probably the problems are gone.
[...]
I expect you're right. The only plug-in I use is the GPGMail one, which,
I have to say, works wonderfully, apart from, er, see above. :)
