Sorry to continue to be dim here but is all the 'user data'
kept in a user folder .. or could it be down to the owner and spread
about all over the place etc?
It will depend where the owner put their documents etc on the HD.
Although iPhoto and iTune files, bookmarks, eMail folders etc are
usually stored in defined places (can't recall where just now
though!). They wont be to difficult to locate though !
Hmm, let's hope, this is all pretty alien to me remember. How do I
open Windows Explorer again ... ?
Nice thanks. And I guess if you did put the original (iffy) drive in
an external caddy you could also pull any bits you missed the first
time (is 'Target Mode' 'exactly' the same (in effect / technically) as
having the disk in an external FW enclosure)?
Yes that will work too. I have done that for other drives but didn't
for this one as I managed to get everything off in target disk mode
and the HD was on its last legs at the end of that process.
Understood . Apart from our Intel Mini we don't have another suitable
Mac available to act as a host for the Target Mode thing. Our Mini's
internal drive is already pretty full but there is an external FW one
that has quite a bit of space on it and luckily another (but untested
and assuming that would work with TB anyway?) FW port on the drive
itself.
So, I thought that replacing the iffy drive with a new one first (as
it probably has to be done anyway) installing OSX and giving him back
his old drive in an external fw case so he can recover what data he
want's himself (if Target Mode has no technical advantage over
re-housing the old drive etc).
Once he has done that he might want to fit a new drive in the new
external enclosure as a backup drive anyway?
All the best and thanks again ..
