PBG4-17 drive issues?

Hi All,

I am trying to help a mates mate who has a PowerBook G4 17" with 1G ram and
is running OSX (10.4.?).

When you turn it on it just comes up with the grey Apply logo screen and the
spinning circle thing and after a few mins of that just shuts down.

If you boot it with the OSX CD (DVD) you can go through the steps till you
come to 'Select a destination' but get no choices?

If you then go 'Utilities > Disk Utilities' you can then see:

55.9 GB FUJITSU MHS2060AT
The Drive (I assume the name of the single partition?)

And the DVD drive.

Highlighting the drive and pressing 'Repair disk' get's it 'repairing' (HPFS
Plus volume) the after:

Checking HFS PLus volume
Checking Extents Overflow file
Checking Catalog file

it comes up in red with ...

Keys out of order

and in green ..

Rebuilding Catalog B-Tree.

(It then pops up with a 'First Aid Failed' with 'The underlying task
reported failure on exit'.)

On the main screen it adds ..

The volume The Drive could not be repaired

Error: 'The underlying task reported failure on exit'

1 HFS volume checked
1 volume could not be repaired because of an error
Repair attempted on 1 volume
1 volume could not be repaired.

So, does this point to a failing hard drive do you think and if so:

How do we get to it to replace it (and is it PATA or SATA).

How could we get at (if possible) the data on the drive please?

All the best ..

T i m ;-)
