Also when I wake it up, the airport is disconnected. I open the menu and
say 'Other...' in network (it doesn't broadcast ssid) and put in the
network. I can then type any password I want in the password box, and
press ok and it will say 'Couldn't connect to network'. If I press 'Try
again' it will connect every time, regardless of network settings.

Is there any way I can get it to connect every time or should i go back
to WEP which worked.

I seem to recall that creating a new Location is sometimes worth trying.

ok, I can give that a try.

Now that is promising, in an article from someone else having wireless
problems a while back, one of the answers was to go to prefered networks,
remove everything and re-add it, but I didn't have a prefered networks
option on my list.
I added a new location, turned off all the nokia blueteeth and internal
modem stuff, went to airport and I could select prefered network.
When I did there were 7 networks in the list, with a variety of names,
covering all wireless networks in use in the computers 4 years of life. I
deleted them all, added the current one to the list and it connected.

Then I put it to sleep and came back here..

Yay - it works! you lovely lovely man - It so isn't true what they say
about you!
