Aha. How *would* a sane person install a device on a slot drive iMini
that doesn't have a tray drive Roger (without adding one that is)?
Remember this is a lone Mac on a network of PC's and a non proficient
person trying to do his best?

it either just works, or download the driver from the website.

Ok (and I repeat), fine if you know what to expect, can find the
driver on the web and know what to do with it when you get it
(different file formats etc). I'm not saying I wouldn't have been able
to sort it but prefer to go 'by the book' at the moment.

Just out of interest Roger, try finding the 10.4.x driver for:

http://www.argos.co.uk/static/Product/partNumber/6751425.htm

(not something that looks like it, that exact make / model)

it's a argo's own brand since they don't seem to have download area or
maybe they they do i'd return it as unfit for purpose my self.

Remember my question (it wasn't an issue because I did extra work to
resolve it at the time) was simply 'do McSlot drives accept mini
CD's', not that I couldn't get past the handicap if they didn't by
copying the files across to a std CD (if possible) or adding extra kit
(external tray loading CD drive .. more clutter round the simple
iMini, all be it for only a short time). I asked a Mac salesman
because I was talking to him and I wasn't aware of a PC with a slot
drive in the place (and even then it's possible the Mac drives did
something 'special').

there not a mac drive but a bog standurd drive ie same as a windows pc
etc.

Yes, std is std, not slot.

it's no more standurd, than a tray, i have only seen one tiny cd and
that was the early days of CD's and was a single, ie some track.

The only place where I could see them actually being an advantage is
in the less that stable / ideal world of the car and using copied
(expendable / less knickable) CD's (and even then an mp3 player might
be 'better')?

they are better idea for laptops and the like as the tray doesn't get
damadged and it's a neater look.

Ok well I'll take yer point re laptops but I have no issue with the
looks of any drive (it's a means to an end on a tool).

the other advantage is damadge old tray loaders often don't fit quite
right or maybe need a bit of shove, and are less likely to attack your
coffee mug if sitting in a cafe say.

a console is differnt kettle of fish for a number of reasons.

Don't some consoles also play audio CD's and DVD's though Roger?

last generations have yes, handy amount of oooph to play HD content as
well.

That's what I though.

i'm fairly sure plenty of windows laptops have slot loaders

Plenty, don't think so, some, possibly (though in my 25 years with
(various makes of) PC's I can't remember seeing one)?

i don't regually go looking at laptops, i like software not hardware.

Understood. I have 12 laptops here and those that actually have CD/DVD
drives at all (ie, not the PB170, SparcBook or the 486 Compaq Contura
<g>) have tray loading ones.

it's not that common, though some of the blueray drives are so prob see
more about, also pc laptops with some exeptions are rather big lumps
more lugable than truely portable.

but some of the sleaker ones do not the cheap ones but they are about.

Well I looked for a std (5-1/4") internal one to fit into this PC (as
an experiment) and couldn't find much at all and certainly nothing
near the £20 odd quid I currently pay for a new tray loading DVDRW
drive.

look for slim and you'll see a fair number some number.

as well as
do car steros.

So I understand. Again, never had one.

i'm sure a friend or what not will have car that has a CD player.

Yes, you are probably correct, in fact now you mention it you are
right because I installed one in my Nieces car (just didn't have a CD
to try it with at the time).

All the best ..
