Righto, although it doesn't work at all well with Safari.

Isn't that strange .. it really didn't occur to me that an 'ordinary'
web site (not a secure or e-commerce site) wouldn't work in *any*
browser (excepting the really old stuff on my Dad's OS9 eMac that is).
I certainly wouldn't have put Edimax's site on that list and I've
never had any issues with it with any PC based browser and even Blazer
on my Palm TX does a reasonable job of it?

I know it's the webs fault (not Safari) them not writing to the std's
etc but what a pain and I just couldn't be doing with it (especially
with something as commonplace as 'web browsing' .). ;-(

I know, I often find myself switching between three or four browsers on
some sites. It just shouldn't be necessary, and it shouldn't be up to
the browsers to have to be recoded to work with badly written sites.

Agreed, except I rarely have any issues using a site with Firstly FF
then IE (like for Windows Updates etc).

As it happens, I've decided on a box now. Having read lots more reviews,
and comments on various forums, I found that all the big names - DLink,
Netgear, Linksys etc., all had varying degrees of problems. I found only
one that seems to have almost none at all, and an almost universal
review scoring of at least 9/10.

Ok ..

That was Buffalo stuff, and I found one on eBuyer for about £30.

Hmm, I wonder if why you couldn't find much bad about them is because
I'm not sure how common / popular they are here (possibly bigger in
the USA etc)?

It
still has wireless in it, and one test found it performed better than
most MIMO routers.

Better in what way Andy (I guess many are built on the same chipset so
would be very similar in speed 'performance' ..)?

Ironically the only Buffalo device I have is a PCMCIA WiFi card
(bought because it has a connector for an external aerial) and it's
the least 'straightforward / compatible' of any of them (and I have
about 5 different makes / models).

I am not likely to use the wireless much, but there's
a chance it could be handy in the future.

A visiting laptop etc ..?

It has all the other features
I need, so I thought it worth a punt.

Indeed, and cheaper than many so as you say .. ;-)

All the best ..

p.s. I just sorted a very weird problem for a mate. He had 3 laptops
and one d/t in his house all connecting wirelessly via a BT 2WIRE
wireless ADSL router. My laptop and Palm TX also connected with no
issues.

He bought his son an old Compaq Evo N610c l/t and whenever it tried to
authenticate with the router using WPA it blue screened (instantly).
I wiped / re-installed XP / drivers, upgraded the BIOS etc, exactly
the same. Brought it home (to give it a good kicking) but it connected
to my Belkin router (also WPA) with no trouble at all and downloaded
many MB of data (OO etc) without a glitch?

Solution, he replaced the 2WIRE router with a (guaranteed for life)
Belkin and now all machines are happy. ;-)

(I sensed there may be an issue with the Evo <> Router combo as the
only other common thing found on the net was with the same laptop when
connecting to Cisco routers)
