Most cheap VPN routers only route into your local network. Perhaps Sak
can recommend one that will then allow traffic back out onto the internet?
Missed the start of this, so I don't know what the requirements were.
What kind of tunnel are we talking about and what do you need to do
exactly?
VPN tunnels are bi-directional. It doesn't matter which end establishes
the tunnel: once it's up, traffic flows both ways. They are a security
problem; this is why by default, most clients default to routing all
traffic through the tunnel once it's up. You can do split routing where
only traffic for the (e.g.) office LAN is routed through the tunnel and
your Internet traffic is routed through your BB router as normal. but
beware that there is a potential attack here where someone on the
Internet might be able to route traffic through your Mac/PC to the
'secure' LAN.
My original question:
My daughter is off to Dubai for a couple of years at the end of the
month.
Phone call charges to and from the UAE are criminally high and we hope
to use IM and Skype to keep in touch. However the local Dubai telecom
monopoly is successfully blocking voip services like Skype.
There are a couple of commercial options using VPN technology that claim
to get round the problem, although according to Skype forums it looks
like one of them no longer works (www.witopia.net).
The other one, http://www.gtsvpn.co.uk, claims to still work.
Before I shell out dosh for this, is it possible to conjure up a home
brew VPN wossname that routes through a UK server?
She has a G4 iBook with 10.4.9.
