I am thinking about converting from Microsoft [oops, sorry for swearing] toWell, as others have said, to edit MS Office documents, you can buy MS
Apple. I am thinking about the 17 inch 2.0GHz. I have a few reservations
that you may be able to help with.
[1] Obviously, being an MS user so far, all my documents and spreadsheets
are in Word and Excel format. Will I be able to open these on an apple
machine without any problems? Will I have to buy any extra software
Office *for Mac*. The file formats are identical between Mac and Windows
Office files (Word, Excel etc), although you should be aware that they
don't make Access for Mac (which IMHO is no great loss!)
You could also download the free, yes - free, NeoOffice
<www.neooffice.org> which is MS Office compatible, although possible not
as 'familiar' in use as Word, Excel & Powerpoint.
[2] I enjoy video editing. Would you recommend an Apple for this?
Absolutely - iMovie is included with all new Macs, and is a really great
editor, with loads of depth, but also really simple to use for
beginners. After that, there's a path through Final Cut Express to Final
Cut Pro, if you need the power and have the budget...
No, you'll need to spend £5 buying a USB reader.
[3] I find my card-reader very useful when transferring photos from my
camera to the computer. Do Apple do an internal card reader?
<www.versiontracker.com> for downloadable software, updates etc,
If you could point me towards any helpful websites that would be useful too.
<www.apple.com/getamac> for switch advice, not just the ads!
<http://www.apple.com/support/mac101> for more switch advice
and here for peer- assistance and advice!

Good luck!
As a matter of interest, why are you thinking of switching? What's
prompted this interest?
