Most of the iMacs run quietly, there are a few exceptions which have
noisy fans and it sounds like you've got one of them. We've got an iMac
at work here that is the same where the fans get a bit noisy. Not had
any noisy Intel ones though.

My room is normal ambient household temp, proly a bit cooler than the
norm, I;m a sweaty bugger.

Also, do the Intel Mac's have a PC-looking bios screen on start - I
couldn't stand that......

Nope on boot they look pretty much identical to the PPC iMacs, just they
boot much quicker, but as someone else has pointed out, these are long
overdue an update, so it may be worth holding off just one or two
weeks...
