Apple BT keyboards and mice

I bought a set for the kids' iMac to get rid of the cable clutter but soon discovered that as the iMac didn't have built-in BT, I couldn't wake it from sleep, so re-instated the wired keyboard & mouse.
Time passes and I acquire a G5 PMac, which does have built-in BT, so I thought I'd give it another go. I pair them with the G5 and they connect OK. However, the "allow BT devices to wake this computer" option is still greyed out. Worse, the mouse doesn't track properly and the keyboard will intermittently not send any keystrokes to the G5, then suddenly send the last key I hit repeatedlyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy. Or it loses the connection completely and needs to be turned off and on befor eit reconnects. Yes, I put new batteries into both.
Am I just unlucky or is there some fundamental design flaw with these? Is there something wrong with the BT in the G5? (Mobile works OK, though this, of course, doesn't use the connection as much as a keyboard or mouse.)
