(Wow! Almost a plane a day!)
Iceland does not have a large population - the entire country has a
population only marginally more than the London borough[1] I grew up in
(London's population dwarfs Iceland's), and I doubt it was much
different back in the WWII years. If that `almost one warplane a day'
is also `often bombing and strafing', it's a big deal to Iceland.
And `almost one a day' is indeed a lot of traffic, surely? Thousands of
occurances over the course of the war - hardly trivia that one can
ignore, is it? `Almost one a day' is certainly not the `very rare'
occurance you falsely claimed.
Even if what you say is true
that would still make encountering a German plane
on a meteo flight a very rare occurrence.
I don't see why. There was an awful lot of traffic as we have
established already.
You don't have to be very close to an aeroplane to have an `encounter'
with it, y'know .
If you want to know what it's like when there's a lot of mad war-time
air-traffic, there's at least one occasion during the First World War
when someone fell out of the back seat of one aeroplane and landed in
another - effectively unhurt.

Rowland.
[1] 300,000 near as damnit against about 250,000. London's population
is around 7.5-8.5 million, depending on how you measure London, and
anyway probably quite a bit more given there's a lot of people who don't
get counted by the official authorities.
One thing I quite like: Iceland's parliament has 63 members (so says my
reading of the CIA factbook right now). 300,000 people, 63
representatives: that's pretty good representation, that is. Britain's
got about 200 times the population but only about 10 times as many MPs.
Oh yeah, and Iceland apparently has 304,000 mobiles phones - more than
the population.
