How is the disk connected? If the disk is Firewire or USB2 you should be
okay, but USB1 is asking for trouble.
Both drives and the burner are Firewire. I had a feeling that the iPod
shuffle and its Dock were having an effect on iTunes delaying as well,
and confusing the drive.
However, last night I spoke too soon - was playing a DVD in the burner,
and VLC crashed after a while, so went for DVD Player, which then did
the 'stuck' thing and I had to do a bloody power button restart - done
about eight of those in the last few days. :-( HAve to try and quit all
other apps first as some of them *hate* those kinds of restarts and act
up.
Do you see these delays only after you haven't touched the disk for a
while, or even when you're in the middle of external-disk-furtling? If
it's the first time you've accessed the disk in a few minutes then the
disk will have spun down (to save electricity and wear-and-tear) so it
will need a second or so to spin up again. As an analogy, think of the
difference in time it takes for the music on your CD player to start
playing if you a) pause a CD between tracks (the disc stays spinning
while paused) or b) press stop, wait, then press play (the disc will stop
spinning until you press play).
I know what you're saying, but some of the delays are longer than others
- I know it has to wake up a bit after spinning down, but sometimes it
is as if it really is having to think. I dunno, maybe this is normal,
but not sure why this batch of behaviour recently.
