ISTR recall that they didn't *quite* force him - he had the choice of
the drugs or prison...

The tale is very, very sad - if Turing had bothered to be just a
*little* bit discreet about his sexuality, he'd've got away with it like
all the other homosexual acadmics of the day (they were considered a
national resource, those brains - the powers that be just hoped they'd
keep it all covered up so everyone could pretend nothing was going on,
y'know?). Of course the law against homosexuality was utter madness and
frankly evil, but it was always fairly easy to avoid being caught by it
if you put your mind to it. Ronnie Kray was never locked up for
buggery, was he?

Oscar Wilde, for example, made the mistake of suing for libel the Maquis
of Queensbury - who'd basically called him a disgusting perverted
poofter, shirtlifter, and so on. But Oscar, that's what you *were*...
Argh. And yes I know exactly which little *** twisted Oscar's arm into
that action - I've read De Profundis (it's sat in a volume a few feet
away along with pretty much the rest of Wilde's published work).
