Apropos of nothing, how does one set up a FTP server in OS X 10.4.9?

At a rough guess, System Prefs -> Sharing -> Services -> FTP access.
Turn it on, you get an ftp server running in 10.4.8 (or so it seems).

And if you're on a router don't forget to forward the correct ports.

Ummm... How does one do that?

I think I might need to do something like that with my router, but how
does one find out `what it means' to `forward the correct ports', and
then how does one find out how to do that?

I have of course read the manual - useless.

Quick and rough diagram

Router
81.151.55.109
|
|
------------------------------------------------
| | | |
G4 mini G4 MDD Mac Pro iBook
FTP Server Filemaker Web serv Fileshare
192.168.1.10 192.168.1.20 192.168.1.30 192.168.1.40
Port 21 5003 80 548 & 427

Each of these different services run different 'ports', currently the
router is set up so any requests to it at any port doesn't go anywhere.
However if you wanted to grant FTP access to somebody, you would have to
tell the router where to send those requests, in this case to the IP
address of the specific machine handling FTP, so in the above example
you would set the router up to forward FTP (port 21) requests to
192.168.1.10, they would then set up their FTP client to go to
81.151.55.109 and they would connect to your mini as long as you've
given them a valid username and password to get into the user account.

I've added the extra machines, to show you could run different services
on different machines, so if I typed 81.151.55.109 into a web browser
(which uses port 80) I'd get whatever website was being served on the
MacPro, if I tried to file share, I'd get your iBook etc.

The ports given are the default ports where people expect to find stuff,
you could tell people to FTP in on port 7654, and tell the router to
forward that port to the mini instead, the person just needs to adjust
the port settings in their ftp client to suit.

Okay - ta.

But do you have any idea how do I find out what a port *is* (I've never
got to the bottom of it), what `forwarding a port' means, or any idea
how I find out how to make the required changes to my router's setup?
The `helpful' BT leaflet explains that I don't need to touch my router
settings unless told to by the helpdesk - so, erm?

Rowland.
