"options" button to select the sub menu that llos archive, upgrade or
clean install the isntaller seemed to crash out. A message came up
telling me "unable to install on this comuter" or something similar
and gave me the option to view an error log. I took a quick view at
the log but it was pages and pages long so I didn't try again as I had
hoped for a fairly unsupervised install.
Any ideas as to what's gone wrong?

You don't have a generic OS X DVD
but one that's specific to another Mac?
