Re: ripping vinyl, get old LPs onto CD, how?

I was going to suggest that. If you one to be bothered by proper RIAA
amplification, you would be more than bothered by the output from a USB
turntable. For one, the turntables used are not of the, er, best
quality.

They are on sale in (some branches of) PC World. I had a fiddle with one
when I was trying to make up my mind abut buying a Mac from PCW. It was
dire, the last time I saw a turntable that badly made was the Strathearn
units sold in the 70s to unsuspecting mugs.

Worse than the Fidelity and BSR decks of the 80's then?

My approach is to use my existing Dual turntable which has a Denon MC
catridge with an existing preamplifier (Mission Cyrus, but I also have a
small mixing desk which gives good results) and connect the preamp
outputs into the Mac's line-in. Then I use Audacity for recording.

I was hunting for a new deck last year, and trying to find a Dual. I
ended up with a Technics SL1800 with an Ortofon VMS29 cartridge. I run
it through a preamp I got from the States last year.

I haven't done much vinyl lately, but I did use the old SparkLE software
for a while. A real shame they abandoned the free version, it was a
great bit of software. Fortunately, Audacity has developed quite well.

For internal audio capture I'm using Soundflower, which works admirably
well.

Not something I have bothered about myself.
