For me it reads fine Peter and thank you for writing it. I am (still
and respectfully) surprised though re your lack of understanding of
*my* position.

I think I do understand your position, and thanks for taking the time to
make such a detailed response. I don't want to convert you, I just want
you to understand why some of us seem to care what operating system
their computer runs, and why it's *not* okay to say "whatever works for
you is fine". That would be like saying "I buy organic free range
chickens, but if you buy chemically and hormonally pumped cage chickens
because you don't care about politics then that's fine too." If everyone
buys the cheap chickens, it makes the quality stuff much harder to find
and much more expensive.

With computers it's even worse, because it's a vicious circle. The
things you say are better about Windows/PCs (for you) are things that
are a result of Microsoft's monopoly. "Compatibility" is an issue
because Microsoft are a 'standard' unto themselves, and hardware vendors
can get away with only making their products work on Windows.
"Availability of software" is the same thing - software makers see the
market share of Windows and think that's where the money is, so that's
what they write their software for.
