Good grief - you're right. Thanks for that (so to speak!).

I'd got as far as removing the two plastic backs off the screens (where the
Apple is), but I guess I'll need to replace 'em & put a few hours aside for
this....

If it's the first time you've taken apart an iBook, I'd allow anywhere
between 1.5 and 4 hours for disassembling and reassembing two of them,
depending whether you need to disassemble the base or not (I can't
remember if you do). Take it slow, and keep all the screws organised.

The trick I use is to draw 'maps' - one A4 page has two rectangles
representing the top and bottom of the outside of the iBook (ie with
hinge, keyboard, trackpad marked), another has two rectangles
representing the top and bottom of the inside (ie with CD drive, RAM
slots etc marked). Then, as you take screws out, you blu-tack them to the
place on the map. It makes reassembly a whole heck of a lot easier.
