The Magsafe adapter, while appreciated (I no longer worry about carefully
routing cables where they won't get snagged) can be a pain in the arse. I
often sit cross-legged on the sofa with my legs propping up the sides of
the laptop (does that make sense?) and the plug often gets popped by the
angle of my knee. This is - so far - only a minor nit and I'm sure I'll
get used to sitting slightly differently.

You could always carve a small recess into your knee.

I'll... bear that suggestion in mind, thankyou.

Rosetta is very impressive but can cause almighty great lags when
starting a piece of software. From that point on, though, performance is
equivalent to or better than my iBook, so again, just another minor
annoyance.

That was my main concern. I think that performance with Rosetta is
[roughly] equal to a 1.25 gig machine from what I've seen - which isn't
very much.

It's enough for me, for the apps I use, for now. I expect that those apps
will be ported to Intel (or I'll find an alternative) in the next year or
so.

Conclusion
----------

I haven't yet played with the bundled software; in fact I haven't really
played with anything heavy duty, so I haven't yet been "wowed" by this
machine - apart from the screen. So far it seems a decent upgrade but I
haven't got the usual dose of RDF. I suspect that will come in time, once
I've had chance to play with the stuff that my iBook couldn't cope with
properly.

I always think the trick with a new machine is to play with it for a few
days then wipe it and start again.

I usually just pull the whole clone over. I'd use Migration Assistant
except that it didn't want to work. Whether this was because the iBook
was so screwed when I did the final clone that it didn't work properly,
or because Migration Assistant b0rked at the PPC install, I don't know.
But it meant that my migration was a lot more of a ball-ache than usual.
I could certainly never entertain the idea of having to set up all my
preferences from scratch each time I buy a new machine.

The new screens [from the first of
the 1.67 powerbooks onwards] are a big improvement though not just in
definition - although the 1400 x 900 bit helps - but in clarity and
usability in different light conditions

Yeah. Even without putting the machines side by side, I can easily tell
the difference between this and the (year-old) iBook's screen. In fact,
when I first turned it on I was impressed by the brightness... only to
find that it shipped with the brightness set to halfway up the scale...
