Any comments would be appreciated...An unmodified Topfield is not worth the money IMO, the remote is
crappy and the user interface is very poor. If you install some of the
TAPS available (programs that can replace and enhance functionality
like the epg etc.) it does become a lot more useful but its
questionable whether a device that costs so much in the first place is
worth it when you have to replace basically all of its inbuilt
functionality to make it usable.
Hmm - one might just as well argue that it's not worth buying a computer
which costs so much because you need to download and install programs to
do things on that, as well...
I'm not saying the Topfield interface is perfect - it can be a bit
fiddly and I agree when you say it's better to try before buying. But at
least it is actually possible to install mods on the TF5800 - I don't
know if this is possible with the Humax or not - and in general the TAP
programs are free.
I only use two: Timer Extend (adds a bit to the beginning and end of
recordings so that you don't lose bits when the broadcast is a bit early
or late) and Quick Jump (press the coloured buttons to skip forwards and
backwards through a recorded program - great for advert breaks).
