That's the equivalent of sending unaddressed mail to every house in the

Not quite. It will only go the houses of those who subscribe to that
newsgroup, which is why I suggested an abandoned one - there was one I
used once or twice that didn't see any other postings for years.

Here "house" is the equivalent of "news server". It will got to every
newserver - tens if not hundreds of thousands of them around the world -
which carries that newsgroup.

Here "house" is a house and "sorting office" is the equivalent of "news
server".

I once asked one of the system operators whether this were true. He
laughed and said, yes, it was, the marginal extra cost of this message
to the net community as a whole could indeed be substantial, but that
the cost was spread extremely thinly across the net, and not to worry so
long as I wasn't misusing the system.

Binary groups are for exchanging files, so that's not misusing the
system. Or is it just the use of a defunct group that you're objecting
to? If I (or Martin, or anyone else) set up a new newsgroup, then that
would not be misusing the system and therefore would therefore be OK?
Even though the costs would be exactly the same?

No, it's the fact that you are broadcasting a message, with all the cost
implications, that should only go to a single destination. Even if you
set up a newsgroup called alt.sara.files, it would still be a misuse,
because netnews is for a quite different purpose, and there are better
alternatives available for this purpose.

I didn't see too many alternatives being offered to the OP.

I'm not having a go at you, just pointing out something that you simply
haven't realised: it really is an extremely anti-social thing to do, and
you really ought to find a different way to transfer such documents.

I didn't think you were; and it still doesn't seem anti-social to me.
We'll just have to agree to disagree on that one. Fear not however,
since I bought my own on-line space n-years ago I've used that. For
those that don't have that option though, it's still a pretty easy way
of shoving the odd huge file around.
