Really indeed, but afaik only on the 1.6 GB model.

Yup.

Although the later dual G5 1.8 got the old 1.6 motherboard with slower
caches and the 4GB RAM slots.

A friend of mine has experience:
after buying a monday model,
and sending it back three times for repairs
it came back with a new processor, new motherboard, and ...
512 Megs of RAM.

Aparently Apple didn't have any 128 MB DIMMM-s left,
