Called them up, explained that the website said I was eligible but wouldn't
verify my serial number. Idly flicked through to the web page as I was
talking to them (and they were checking the details) and spotted that the
iBook serials were only eligible with a specific set of suffixes, which
mine wasn't in.

So - was the suffix set always there for iBooks, or was I genuinely caught
out by a change between when I checked and when I called up?

The suffix set was _not_ there when I checked my PB12" against the
page a few days ago. I'm sure of this, because I wasn't 100% convinced
I was reading the correct serial number, since mine was many more
characters long than just the five they had in the list.

Right. Originally the serial checker was broken. It would accept
neither the full serial nor the abbreviated form.

A day later it would, and accepted the full serial. My replacement is
on its way. Mine was in the A1079's 3K.... range which has not had a
suffix restriction added.
