Someone had done this to the iMac on display in the local branch of
Pissy Werld a few months back, and had also adjusted the contrast,
making it look knackered.

Thanks for your replies. which solved the problem. My one last question
is why has Apple made such a facility availaible.

It's part of the means by which users with visual impairments can make
the mac more easy for them to use.
