Why do Apple use UPS for parcels?

I've recently applied for a replacement MacBook Pro battery, as mine
was one of the batch that was likely to expand with use.
They've shipped it via UPS, and attempted to deliver it to my home
address, when I'm at work instead.
Now the fun is getting the parcel. I've got to either arrange to take a
day off work to wait for it, or pick the thing up from their depot 40+
miles from home. Thankfully the depot is open on Saturdays, and it
gives me an excuse to check out a shop in the area I've been meaning to
visit for a while. They also want me to take some photographic ID with
me, which I don't have!
Anyway it's an excuse to get out. But still a round trip of 80 miles is
a bit steep. Can't they use the Post Office instead?
