(I don't know if it will dial up if not

That'll depend on the G4's settings, I'd've thought?

If you enable 'Connect automatically when needed' then I think it will
then connect when the G5 requests.

Yeah. I have connect automatically when needed turned off, because it
connects automatically when not needed if I do it any other way. (with
one ISP account, I get an automatic connection when I log on, a
different one won't disconnect on idle, things like that - none of that
sort of stuff works as advertised; gotta do it all manaually).

Ah yes, well MacOS makes various calls on the outside world, and you
need to know what they are to stop all that. I had for a while 56k dial
up on a router, as this thing would call up without notice, even
attempted to dial up whilst the phone was active, I got rid of all those
factors, especially after I found out the 3am built in maintanence
schedule made a call on the router, and the internal speaker was loud
enough to wake up the house. Stuff that shouts to the outside world
includes Software Update, clock sync, that 3am cron job, probably more,
I know I detailed this more before in a post back when it was current.

Ah...

Just tested using the 56k and it went
through the motions although the phone cable is disconnected.

As Graham said its worth looking at a router [2], or may ponder if ADSL
is available if there isn't a reason to be on it?

ISDN `just works'. I don't want `always on' - hell, if I had that, I'd
have to find out about firewalls *properly* and get a box with a
firewall in it and learn how to configure it, then I'd have to set up
secure filesharing just for local filesharing and I've got done that
yet. The list goes on and on and on and on. ADSL is not for me just
yet.

As Daniele says with a TA you are currently as open to the internet as a
USB ADSL modem, or 56k dial up. Switching to ADSL with a router, or at
least putting a router in place puts in hardware between you and the
net. Most routers come pretty secure to the outside world, probably
buying something non Netgear Belkin etc probably adds etc security as
the kids don't know them so well. The Zyxels are a good choice for this,
even with remote management enabled you can't get at the buggers, you
have to then enable the firewall rules to let you in to manage them to.
Basically put one of those on an ADSL connection, leave it as it came
out of the box, unless somebody is absolutely damned determined, they
aren't going to get in.

PS I can't see any reason why not to run through the gigabit switch,
shouldn't cause any issues.

[1] Bar the IPv6 address thats a one off for your machine
[2] Which should be available for next to nothing nowadays, does Sak
still have an old stockpile?

I've got ISDN. It doesn't give me any trouble. I like it. I also like
having two phone lines.

You probably wouldn't be saying that after not very long on ADSL. You
can still have twin lines, or just one, remember you aren't tieing a
line down with a connection with ADSL, plus VOiP is getting more of a
reality.
