IYHO.
I got out of PC consulting while DOS still ruled, although some brave
souls were actually running Windows 3.1, they still kept anything
mission critical on their DOS boxes. When W95 came out, a mere 12 years
after MS had been shown how to do a useable GUI, I was exposed to it
because a lot of the companies I did work for had mixed Mac/PC
environments. W95 made me laugh. What a hideous bodge.
In many ways it wasn't nicer to use than Sys 7.5 which is what I left it for - file management, app management - they were all worse. But it was -way- faster, I didn't have to pre-guess memory allocation on a per-app basis, I could multitask without trouble, app crashes didn't bring the whole OS down which they frequently still did in Macs...there was a lot to be said for it.
Anyone doing anything vaguely serious with PCs was running NT, which was
at least stable enough if lacking in any elegance or user friendliness,
but still a pig to have to reinstall as frequently required on user's
machines.
Can't speak for NT 3.5.1, but I ran NT 4 for a while and found it -mostly- nicer than Win95 (I seem to remember that 95's control panels were a bit more obvious to use). Never had to reinstall NT 4.
I skipped over 98 and went to 2000, still the best version of Windows I feel.
Macs were either very slow in comparison to 486DX-66s of the era, or
heart-stoppingly overpriced in order to get similar performance. And
whilst it's interface was very nice, it's underlying OS was pretty aged
and terrible.
At least its apostrophes behaved themselves.
<cue Daniele and pus post>
<cough> I, errr...don't know what you mean. Honest.
Cheers,
Ian
