anacron cron.monthly extended attributes error

By chance I spotted this in the system.log just now:

Jul 3 00:50:07 mercury anacron[5956]: Job `cron.monthly' started
Jul 3 00:50:08 mercury cp: error processing extended attributes:
Operation not permitted
Jul 3 00:50:08 mercury anacron[5956]: Job `cron.monthly' terminated
Jul 3 00:50:08 mercury anacron[5956]: Normal exit (2 jobs run)

That looks like cron.monthly contains a cp command that failed and
caused the whole script to terminate early. If I don't discover and fix
the problem soon I may start to get knock-on problems elsewhere due to
overflowing log files or other lapses in housekeeping. How can I track
down the cause of the problem without making a right mess of my system?

Can anyone else see extended attribute errors in their system.log?
Does anyone else use anacron?
Can anyone give me a hint as to what extended attributes are and why
they might be causing a problem like this?

Thanks.
