Just doesn't bloody work.

Does Console.app show anything happening in the logs when Safari
starts up?

Gulp. Yes. It says many, many things along the lines of:

2006-06-30 15:28:17.804 Safari[924] *** -[NSBundle load]: Error loading
code /Users/sara/Library/InputManagers/Smart Crash Reports/Smart Crash
Reports.bundle/Contents/MacOS/Smart Crash Reports for bundle
/Users/sara/Library/InputManagers/Smart Crash Reports/Smart Crash
Reports.bundle, error code 2 (link edit error code 0, error number 0 ())

Try moving that out of the InputManagers folder? Maybe you need a
Universal version of it, though you ought to be able to live without it.

I'll try that next week - packing up for the w/e now.

Can't see much packing happening on that webcam. Which works on my
safari (2.0.3 - build 417.9.3) on my intel macbook.
