This means that your Mac cannot connect to the Windows File Sharing
service on the PC - that's something that happens *way* before you
enter usernames and passwords.

The most common reason for this would be the PC blocking the connection
using a firewall. Disable that and retry.

Have turned off Zone Alarm, checked that Windows Firewall is not
operative and tried to make contact from the Mac but with no effect.
Although Windows Firewall is off there is an entry under the
Advanced/Network Connections tab which say that the firewall is
enabled for LAN and Wireless Network and when I access the setting for
either there is a tick entered against Teredo - I do not yet know what
that means. With Zone Alarm I have moved all the relevant IP
addresses into the Trusted Zone anyway.

OK. There's a simple test you can do from your Mac which avoids any of
the Mac's file sharing software. Use the terminal (sorry) and type:

telnet 192.168.1.3 139
(hit return)

This tries to connect to the file sharing service (port 139) on that IP
address (so replace with your PC's current IP address). If it returns
with something like "Connected" just close the Terminal window - this
means the connection worked. If it says anything else, what's the exact
error message?

Cheers,

Chris

Error message: Connection refused. Cannot connect to remote host.

I did a port scan from the Mac of the PC and found that port 139 is
not open. Ports 135 epmap and 515 printer are open and both
connected. Does that say anything?
Many thanks for the help,
Reg
