This means that your Mac cannot connect to the Windows File Sharing
service on the PC - that's something that happens *way* before you
enter usernames and passwords.

The most common reason for this would be the PC blocking the connection
using a firewall. Disable that and retry.

Have turned off Zone Alarm, checked that Windows Firewall is not
operative and tried to make contact from the Mac but with no effect.
Although Windows Firewall is off there is an entry under the
Advanced/Network Connections tab which say that the firewall is
enabled for LAN and Wireless Network and when I access the setting for
either there is a tick entered against Teredo - I do not yet know what
that means. With Zone Alarm I have moved all the relevant IP
addresses into the Trusted Zone anyway.

It might also be that you cannot route packets to the PC (or it cannot
route them back) because the IP addresses of the two machines are on
different IP networks. Can you tell us what the IP addresses of the two
machines are? Are the machines connected via a hub or something like an
ADSL router?

192.168.1.2 and 192.168.1.3 each connected wirelessly to a BT Voyager
2091 Router modem whose IP is 192.168.1.1

I am still pretty much a learner as regards Macs so any help where I
might find /etc/hosts to check out what's entered there would be most
helpful.

That's a red herring for now.

Chris
