Couple of days ago I was with a client who has an Airport Express that
just
been used as an access point. After setting up iTunes sharing and remote
speakers, I thought I'd setup their Epson printer via the AE. Its an Epson
Photo jobbie.
Worked fine, apart from the fact that it was selecting the GIMP-Print PPD
connecting via Bonjour rather than using the normal Epson USB package.
Which
means you lose all the nice options.
Anyone out their with an Epson and AE? Is this the normal behaviour or can
I can trick it somehow?
This is normal behaviour. Many Epson printer drivers are USB only, as Epson
does not properly support CUPS. Same with HP and Canon. The only major vendor
which ships CUPS-compliant drivers with _all_ their printers and MFDs, or at
least all of them that they say are Mac-compatible, is Brother. Unfortunately
Brother printers are not known for the quality of their graphics output.
_Some_ HP, Canon, and Epson printers ship with CUPS-compliant drivers which
will work with USB _and_ when connected via a network, including a wireless
network. This means that HP, Canon, and Epson know how to make CUPS-compliant
drivers, and instead _choose_ to cripple their drivers for many of their
printers.
Worth knowing. Know any reference of which printers have CUPs compliant
drivers?
GIMP-Print, of course, is fully CUPS-compliant, which is why it works over
the network.
Yup
And thanks.
